What is Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering?
Mechanical and manufacturing engineering is a broad discipline concerned with the design, development, manufacture, operation and maintenance of a wide variety machinery. Mechanical and manufacturing engineers plan and design diverse products from turbines and internal combustion engines to refrigeration equipment, household goods, factory equipment, medical devices vehicles of all types, as well as numerous complex machines that we have come to take for granted in everyday life. This course aims to give the student an understanding of the technology and management used in modern manufacturing industries. Each student undertakes a twelve week work placement and a project to design and/or manufacture components or a production system.
What is Mechatronics Engineering?
Mechatronic Engineering, combines the fundamental principles of mechanical engineering technology with knowledge of electrical and electronic circuits to design, develop, test and manufacture electrical and computer- controlled mechanical systems. This course aims to give the student an understanding of the mechanical and electronic systems used in modern manufacturing industries. Each student undertakes a twelve week work placement and a project to design and test a mechatronics system
Why study Manufacturing and Mechatronics Engineering at IT, Tralee?
The Forfás report, Guidance for Higher Education Providers on Current and Future Skills Needs for Enterprise (2012), pinpoints the fields of manufacturing and general engineering as potential growth sectors for employment. The high technology manufacturing sector is particularly singled out as being critical to our economic recovery. This sector will enhance our capacity to maximise regional, national and/or international business opportunities.
The first three semesters of this programme are common and students will then be given an option to progress into two specialisation streams (Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering or Mechatronics Engineering). At the outset, there is a strong emphasis on practical engineering subjects while specialist modules on embedded systems, advanced manufacturing technology, control and robotics are taken in years two and three. The course combines the fundamental principles of mechanical engineering technology with knowledge of electrical and electronic circuits to design, develop, test and manufacture electrical and computer-controlled mechanical systems.
Students will be equipped with specialised problem solving skills and will be prepared for leadership roles.The programme provides broad knowledge in mechanical engineering and prepares graduates for work in a wide variety of fields. The Institute has excellent facilities, including the following:

Graduates work in a variety of industries including manufacturing, electronics, automotive, automation, maintenance and development. Engineering roles include areas such as factory management, applications or hardware design, IC design, multimedia applications, network administration, power engineering, process control, software development, telecommunications, design, service, testing and verification.
A central feature of the majority of School of STEM programmes is the inclusion of a twelve week industrial work placement, where students participate in a structured and assessed period of work experience in a relevant engineering or scientific professional setting. It is on placement that students can see how their academic learning can be applied and tested in a real-life working environment, laying the foundations for each student's personal career path. In essence, work placement is learning in real time; developing skills, gaining knowledge and cultivating the attitude that is required from graduates across academic disciplines and professional fields.
Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) in Manufacturing Engineering Management (+2 Years). This course is of two years duration made up of two study blocks (fifteen weeks each), one industrial placement (twenty weeks) and a major project (eleven weeks).
